The history of the stadium stretches back to the colonial era, when French West Africa began constructing sports infrastructure in its urban centres. A ground and stand in Abidjan existed before independence under the name Stade Geo Andre -- a reference to the celebrated French athlete and football international of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Foundation and early years

The stadium was formally inaugurated in 1952 as Stade Geo Andre and served as the main sports venue in what was then the capital of the French colony. Following Cote d'Ivoire's independence in 1960, the state began actively developing sports infrastructure as a vehicle for national identity. In 1964 the stadium was renamed in honour of President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, and it has carried that name ever since.

Renovations and development

Through the 1960s to the 1980s the arena underwent successive construction phases that expanded capacity and modernised the stands. The most significant overhaul came in connection with the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, which Cote d'Ivoire hosted for the first time -- the ground was substantially upgraded and extended to meet CAF standards. Though the Ivorian team did not win the home tournament, the organisational effort embedded the stadium firmly in the national consciousness.

The defining chapter of the stadium's recent history was the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (staged in January 2024), which Cote d'Ivoire hosted for the first time in four decades. The Ivorian Elephants, coached by Jean-Louis Gasset, navigated a dramatic tournament -- a slow group stage was followed by a remarkable knockout run -- and defeated Nigeria 2:1 in the final to claim the country's third continental title. The final, played on this ground, was one of the most emotionally charged moments in Ivorian sporting history. Earlier milestones include the AFCON 1984 final and the qualifying campaigns of Didier Drogba's generation in the early 2000s that brought Ivorian football to genuine global attention.

The greatest recent occasion was the AFCON 2023 final (played in January 2024), when Cote d'Ivoire defeated Nigeria to claim continental glory. The terraces erupted, supporters wept and danced, and the celebration was the kind of uncontained emotion only football nations with no filter for their joy can produce. The regional rivalry with Ghana -- a neighbouring country and Cote d'Ivoire's most storied opponent -- has produced some of the most explosive moments in this stadium's history; their West African classique is experienced here with exceptional intensity.

Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny is located in the Plateau district of Abidjan, accessible via the main urban road network from the bridges connecting Plateau to adjacent communes such as Adjame and Treichville. Abidjan is the largest city in Cote d'Ivoire and the principal international gateway to the country, served by Felix Houphouet-Boigny International Airport (ABJ) -- named, like the stadium, after the first president.

How to get there

• Taxi: Shared Abidjan taxis (woro-woro) are the most common form of local transport; for visitors a private taxi or ride-share is more comfortable -- the journey from the Plateau hotel area takes 10--20 minutes depending on traffic.
• Bus: The city bus network covers the main arteries; from outlying neighbourhoods such as Cocody or Yopougon allow approximately 30--45 minutes.
• Car: The stadium connects directly to Plateau's main road junctions; parking in the immediate vicinity is limited -- arriving early or using a more distant paid area is recommended.
• Matchday planning: On major match occasions all routes into Plateau become congested; build in at least 60 minutes of extra time before kick-off.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for national team fixtures are sold through the FIF (Federation Ivorienne de Football) or at the stadium box office. For high-demand games -- AFCON fixtures and World Cup qualifiers especially -- buying early is strongly advised, as demand far outstrips supply. ASEC Mimosas league matches and domestic cup ties are available at the gates on the day. Organised public tours of the stadium are not regularly scheduled.

Visitor tips

• When to arrive? Plan to be at the ground 45--60 minutes before kick-off -- the streets around the stadium fill with vendors, drumming groups and supporter processions well before the official start.
• Weather: Abidjan lies in a tropical climate zone with high humidity year-round; evening kick-offs are considerably more comfortable than afternoon fixtures. Light, breathable clothing from natural fibres is recommended.
• Safety: Check current travel advisories before visiting; on major matchdays security forces are present in increased numbers around the stadium perimeter and at entry points.
• Local food: Street stalls near the stadium serve traditional Ivorian cuisine -- attiéké (cassava couscous), alloco (fried plantain), grilled fish and brochettes are essential tastes and are available at very accessible prices.
