Přehled

O stadionu

Europa-Park Stadion is a modern football stadium in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, built as the new home of Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. The venue holds 34,700 spectators, including approximately 6,000 standing places on the home end terrace. It opened in October 2021, replacing the former Dreisamstadion (also known as the Schwarzwald-Stadion) which the club had used for decades. In UEFA competitions the arena is known as Stadion am Wolfswinkel.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is located in the Brühl district on the south-western outskirts of Freiburg, directly adjacent to Freiburg Airport. Solar panels mounted on the roof and other eco-friendly construction features have established it as one of Germany's most sustainable football venues. The surrounding area is suburban, with good road and public transport links to the city centre.

Main uses

The stadium serves as the primary home of SC Freiburg for Bundesliga matches and UEFA competition fixtures. Its name comes from the title sponsor — the Europa-Park theme park in nearby Rust, one of the largest amusement parks in Europe. The facility offers modern supporter amenities, VIP hospitality, and a club fan shop.

Historie

Cesta časem

SC Freiburg represents one of German football's most enduring underdog stories — a relatively small club from the south-west that has maintained a persistent presence in the Bundesliga against much wealthier rivals. That journey ultimately led to the construction of a modern dedicated arena.

Construction and opening

Plans for a new stadium developed over many years. The former Dreisamstadion, with a capacity of around 24,000, had become outdated both technically and in terms of capacity. The new stadium in the Brühl district was built between 2019 and 2021 and officially opened in October 2021. A defining feature of the project was its commitment to ecological sustainability: the roof carries solar panels that generate electricity for the stadium's own operations.

Key milestones

SC Freiburg immediately entered the most successful period in the club's history after moving to the new arena. In the 2021/22 Bundesliga season they finished 6th, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time ever. The stadium hosted European fixtures almost immediately after opening, rapidly establishing itself as a respected venue in continental football.

Naming and sponsorship

The name Europa-Park Stadion reflects a sponsorship agreement with Germany's largest theme park. UEFA regulations prohibit commercial stadium names in competition contexts, so the arena is designated Stadion am Wolfswinkel in European matches — a name derived from the historical local name of the area.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Europa-Park Stadion is widely regarded as producing an atmosphere that punches above its weight for a stadium of its size. SC Freiburg commands one of the most cohesive and passionate supporter communities in the Bundesliga.

Fan culture

Freiburg is a university city with a strong community culture, and this is reflected on the terraces. The standing section, holding approximately 6,000 supporters, is the engine room of the matchday atmosphere — sustained chanting, flags, and tifo displays from the ultras groups fill all 90 minutes without pause. Supporters take pride in Freiburg's identity as the archetypal 'small club' that has earned its place in the Bundesliga through hard work rather than financial muscle. That pride translates into unwavering support regardless of the scoreline.

Big matches

For SC Freiburg, home Europa League fixtures carry special significance as landmarks in the club's history. Derby encounters against other south-western German clubs consistently generate the most charged atmosphere inside the arena. Although the stadium's capacity is modest by Bundesliga standards, the enclosed roof design traps crowd noise effectively, producing a sound environment that rivals considerably larger venues.
