Overview
About the stadium
The Estadio Universidad San Marcos is a multi-purpose stadium in Lima, Peru, with a capacity of 67,469. Inaugurated on 13 May 1951, it belongs to the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) and is set within the university city, serving both football and athletics.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands inside the University City (Ciudad Universitaria) of the National University of San Marcos in Lima, the capital of Peru. Covering an area of roughly 48,782 m², it sits at the heart of the campus, woven into the daily academic life of students, teachers and administrators. Immediately nearby lies the archaeological excavation site known as Huaca San Marcos, a pre-Columbian adobe structure that gives the setting a rare historical depth. The blend of academic surroundings, sporting facilities and an ancient monument makes the venue distinctive among Lima's stadiums.
Main uses
The Estadio de la UNMSM is a multi-purpose venue equipped with a running track that allows it to host athletics alongside football. Beyond sport, it stages extracurricular activities for the university's students, teachers and staff. Today it serves as an alternate ground for Club Universitario de Deportes, which plays in Peru's First Division. Previously it was the official home of the university's own side, Club Deportivo Universidad San Marcos, then in the Second Division. Thanks to its availability, the stadium is also used by several Peruvian teams without a home ground.
History
Journey through time
The story of the Estadio de la UNMSM began in the mid-20th century, as the National University of San Marcos developed its modern University City in Lima.
Construction and opening
The stadium was inaugurated on 13 May 1951 with an original seating capacity of 32,000. It was built as part of the newly created University City (Ciudad Universitaria) of the National University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas. The stadium grounds cover roughly 48,782 m² and were conceived from the outset as multi-purpose, combining a running track for athletics with a football pitch. The venue is today recorded with a capacity of 67,469.
Major renovations
For the safety of the public, the maximum operating capacity has been reduced to 32,000 seats. The stadium has been adapted to meet safety requirements while continuing to serve both elite sport and everyday university life. Its athletic track and multi-purpose layout make it a versatile facility suited to a range of disciplines rather than football alone.
Notable moments
In 2019, the stadium became a key venue for major international events. It served as the main stadium for the football matches of the 2019 South American U-17 Championship and was also one of the stadiums of the 2019 Pan American Games, hosted by Lima. These tournaments confirmed its standing as an important sporting facility in the Peruvian capital and brought international and youth-representative football to its pitch.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at the Estadio Universidad San Marcos is closely tied to its campus setting — a sports ground in the middle of a living university where academic and football worlds meet.
Fan culture
The venue breathes the particular character of the University City of the National University of San Marcos. It is not the fortress of a single big club but an open facility where students, teachers and staff regularly gather for extracurricular activities, lending it a more intimate, academic feel. When the First Division side Club Universitario de Deportes arrives to use it as an alternate ground, however, it brings along its loyal supporters and the stands come alive with the typical passion of Peruvian football.
Big matches
The stadium's most prominent moments came in 2019. As the main stage for the football matches of the 2019 South American U-17 Championship, it hosted youth national teams from across the continent and showcased future South American stars. The same year it formed part of the 2019 Pan American Games staged by Lima, one of the largest sporting events in the city's history. Thanks to its availability, the ground also regularly hosts matches for Peruvian teams that lack a home stadium, so a colourful mix of clubs and their fans passes through across a season.
