Overview

About the stadium

Estádio Paulo Constantino, universally known as the "Prudentão," is the largest football stadium in the city of Presidente Prudente, in the western interior of São Paulo state, Brazil. With a capacity of 45,954 spectators, it ranks among the biggest grounds in the Brazilian interior and is the flagship sporting venue of the entire Alta Sorocabana region.

The heart of football in Presidente Prudente

The municipally owned stadium serves as home to a series of local clubs. Grêmio Prudente played here in 2010–2011 during its spell in the top flight of the Campeonato Paulista, alongside clubs such as Oeste Paulista, Prudentino and the local Corinthians. Its size and capacity made it a regular host for matches involving major clubs from the city of São Paulo seeking to reach fans in the interior.

  • Official name: Estádio Paulo Constantino
  • Former name: Estádio Eduardo José Farah (nicknamed "Farahzão")
  • Opened: 1982
  • Capacity: 45,954 seats

History

Journey through time

The stadium was inaugurated on 12 October 1982 with a match in which Santos defeated the local Corinthians 1–0. Its original capacity was just 20,000 spectators, so the ground underwent successive expansions as its regional importance grew.

From Farahzão to Paulo Constantino

For many years the venue carried the name Estádio Eduardo José Farah, popularly called "Farahzão." In 2001 the capacity was temporarily raised to 50,000, before being adjusted after renovations to today's 45,954 spectators. A major refurbishment was carried out between 2007 and 2008.

  • Attendance record: 45,972 spectators (Palmeiras 3–1 Corinthians, 3 March 1996)
  • Renaming: in 2013 the stadium reverted to the name Paulo Constantino
  • Nickname "Prudentão": a direct nod to the city of Presidente Prudente

Thanks to its modern infrastructure, the ground has been used as a training base and a venue for friendly matches by national and club teams seeking quality facilities away from the crowded big cities.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at the Prudentão has a distinct flavour of the Brazilian interior. When one of the major clubs from the city of São Paulo visits, or a key Campeonato Paulista fixture is played, the stands come alive with the colours, drums and chants of tens of thousands of fans drawn from across the Alta Sorocabana region.

Interior passion

Unlike the packed arenas of the big cities, the Prudentão offers an open, sun-drenched setting where football is celebrated as a festival of the local community. The record crowd of 45,972 in 1996 still stands as proof of just how much energy the ground can generate when the whole city turns out.

  • Best experience: derbies and matches against the traditional São Paulo giants
  • Folklore: drums, flags and the trademark Brazilian terrace singing
  • Community: the stadium is the pride of Presidente Prudente and the western interior

Even at smaller matches between local clubs, the action on the pitch retains a warm, family feel that draws visitors into Brazilian football culture.
