O stadionu
Estádio Nacional do Jamor is Portugal's historic national stadium, opened on 10 June 1944 with a current capacity of approximately 37,000 seats. It stands in Oeiras, roughly 15 km west of central Lisbon, within the sprawling Complexo Desportivo do Jamor — a publicly managed sports park on the banks of the River Jamor. Designed by architect Miguel Jacobetty Rosa in the monumental style of the Salazar era, the stadium is the permanent venue for the Taça de Portugal final and occasionally hosts the Portugal national football team.
Location and surroundings
The stadium sits inside a large state-run sports complex surrounded by parkland, athletics tracks, and tennis courts. The nearest town is Oeiras, and Lisbon is accessible via the A5 motorway or by train from Cruz Quebrada station on the Cascais line. A scenic path runs alongside the River Jamor through the complex.
Main uses
The primary annual event is the Taça de Portugal final, hosted at Jamor almost without interruption since the 1940s. This fixture transforms the normally peaceful surroundings into a celebration drawing tens of thousands of fans from across Portugal. The complex also serves as the headquarters of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude), which manages the surrounding sports facilities.
Historie
Cesta časem
Construction of the Estádio Nacional do Jamor began in 1938 and was completed in 1944 under the government of António de Oliveira Salazar. The stadium was a centrepiece of a state propaganda programme intended to display the power and modernity of the Estado Novo regime. The official inauguration took place on 10 June 1944 — Portugal's National Day — in the presence of Salazar himself.
Construction and opening
Designed by architect Miguel Jacobetty Rosa, the stadium was built in a neo-classical monumental style using extensive manual labour. Its most striking architectural feature is the open south end — the stand on the north side is covered by a sweeping concrete roof, while the southern end remains deliberately open, framing a view of the green valley beyond. Original standing capacity exceeded 50,000; the installation of seats over subsequent decades reduced this to approximately 37,000.
Major renovations
The stadium has undergone incremental updates over the decades — including fixed seating, improved changing facilities, and media infrastructure — but its essential character and original architecture remain largely intact. No wholesale redevelopment has taken place, preserving the distinctive aesthetic of the mid-20th-century design.
Notable moments
The defining moment in Jamor's history came on 25 May 1967, when the stadium hosted the European Cup Final. Celtic FC of Scotland defeated Inter Milan 2-1, becoming the first British club to win the premier European club competition. The Celtic squad — entirely composed of players born within 30 miles of Glasgow — is immortalised as the 'Lisbon Lions'. Their attacking, open style of play triumphed over the defensive catenaccio system deployed by Inter under coach Helenio Herrera, making it a landmark result in the history of European football.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at the Taça de Portugal final is unlike any other occasion in Portuguese football. Jamor's historic terraces, open southern end, and green parkland setting lend every match a romanticism that modern all-seater arenas rarely replicate.
Fan culture
The Taça de Portugal final draws tens of thousands of supporters from across Portugal every year, with the character of the occasion entirely shaped by the two clubs that reach the final. When Benfica, FC Porto, or Sporting CP are involved, fans begin arriving from early morning, turning the Jamor complex into a pilgrimage site for hours before kick-off. The final is traditionally played on a Saturday evening in May, and the entire day carries a festive, almost carnival atmosphere throughout the park and surrounding roads.
Big matches
Beyond the 1967 European Cup Final, Jamor has hosted dozens of historic Taça de Portugal finals in which clubs claimed first-ever trophies or broke records. Generations of Benfica, Porto, and Sporting supporters have experienced both triumph and heartbreak on this ground. The occasional Portugal national team fixture here carries its own weight of symbolism, as fans stand on the same pitch where Portuguese football has written its most important chapters across more than 80 years.
Praktické info
Návštěva stadionu
Estádio Nacional do Jamor lies outside central Lisbon and requires some planning to reach, particularly on cup final days when traffic in the area is heavy.
How to get there
- Train: from Lisbon Cais do Sodré, take the Cascais line to Cruz Quebrada station (approximately 15 minutes); the stadium is a roughly 1.5 km walk from the platform
- Bus: TST suburban buses connect Oeiras and neighbouring towns to the complex; additional direct services are usually laid on for final days
- By car: motorway A5 (Cascais motorway), exit Oeiras/Jamor; the complex has extensive car parks but they fill early on match days
- From Lisbon: the train-plus-walk combination is the most reliable option and avoids road congestion
Tickets and tours
Tickets for the Taça de Portugal final are sold by the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) through its official ticketing portal; allocations depend on which clubs contest the final. The stadium is not open for tourist visits on non-match days, but the Complexo Desportivo do Jamor is publicly accessible and a walk around the stadium and along the river is a popular activity.
Visitor tips
- When to arrive: at least 90 minutes before kick-off on final day — entry queues and traffic build up significantly
- Parking: if driving, arrive early; capacity is limited and nearby roads become congested well before the match
- Weather: the final is played in May — expect warmth but the river valley can be breezy; a light layer is worth packing
- Around the complex: the Complexo Desportivo includes an athletics stadium, tennis courts, and pleasant riverside paths — worth exploring before the match
