The history of Estadio Modelo dates back to the late 1950s, when Guayaquil set out to build a modern multi-purpose venue for the growing popularity of football in the coastal region. Since opening in 1959 the stadium has been one of the city's key sporting facilities.

Construction and opening

The stadium was opened in July 1959 as a multi-purpose venue under the name Estadio Modelo. From the outset it served mainly association football and became home to a number of Guayaquil clubs. Its capacity of 48,000 spectators made it one of the largest sports grounds in this part of Ecuador.

Major renovations

The most significant change in the stadium's history was its renaming. After the death of Alberto Spencer -- the all-time top scorer of the Copa Libertadores and an Ecuadorian footballing icon -- in November 2006, the Ecuadorian Football Federation chose to rename the stadium in his honour as Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer Herrera.

Notable moments

The stadium was one of the host venues of the 2001 South American U-20 Championship, writing it into international youth football. Beyond sport, it has staged major musical events: Shakira played a sold-out concert here on 30 November 2006, and the cast of Soy Luna performed twice in 2017, drawing crowds of over 40,000 people.
