Overview
About the stadium
Estádio Ilha do Retiro is the historic home of Sport Club do Recife, one of the great clubs of north-eastern Brazil, set on a former island in the Recife district that gives the ground its name. Officially called Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho, but known to everyone simply as Ilha do Retiro or "the Ilha," it has been Sport's fortress since the 1930s and remains one of the oldest stadiums in the region still in continuous use.
Key facts
- Home club: Sport Club do Recife ("Leão da Ilha," the Lion of the Island)
- Capacity: approximately 32,983 spectators (with a reduced operating capacity around 26,300)
- Location: Ilha do Retiro neighbourhood, Recife, Pernambuco
- Pitch: 105 × 78 m of natural grass
Compact, steep and famously loud, the Ilha was the first stadium built within the city of Recife and remains the spiritual heart of one of Pernambuco's most passionate footballing communities.
History
Journey through time
Sport Club do Recife purchased a 17-hectare property on the island and built the ground, which opened on 4 July 1937 with Sport beating local rivals Santa Cruz 6–5 in a thrilling debut. It was the first stadium constructed inside the city of Recife, and over the decades it grew into the spiritual home of football in Pernambuco.
Glories and milestones
- In 1950 it staged a FIFA World Cup match between Chile and the United States.
- Its defining moment came in 1987, when Sport won the Brazilian Championship, defeating Guarani in a title later confirmed by Brazil's Supreme Federal Court.
- In 2008 the Ilha hosted the decisive second leg of the Copa do Brasil final, where Sport beat Corinthians 2–0 to lift the trophy.
- The record attendance of 56,875 was set on 7 June 1998 for a Sport match against Porto/PE.
The stadium was named after Adelmar da Costa Carvalho, a club president who oversaw major renovations, and successive redevelopments have modernised the stands while preserving its intimate character.
Atmosphere
Matchday
Few grounds in Brazil generate the heat of the Ilha do Retiro when Sport's torcida fills the steep terraces. Draped in the club's iconic red and black, the crowd presses close to the pitch, turning the compact bowl into a wall of noise that has long unsettled visiting teams. This is the den of the Leão da Ilha — the Lion of the Island — and the lion roars loudest here.
Matchday intensity
- Red-and-black flags, drums and chanting fill the stands from well before kick-off.
- State derbies against Náutico and Santa Cruz — the fierce Recife rivalries known as the Clássico dos Clássicos — bring the ground to boiling point.
- The closeness of the stands to the field amplifies every cheer, making the Ilha one of the most intimidating venues in the north-east.
For Sport supporters the Ilha is more than a stadium; it is a fortress and a symbol of belonging, where generations have celebrated the club's greatest triumphs.
