Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Gran Parque Central is a historic football stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the home ground of Club Nacional de Football, one of the two giants of Uruguayan football alongside its eternal rival Peñarol. Located in the La Blanqueada neighbourhood, it holds 34,361 spectators for domestic matches (28,251 for international competitions). It ranks among the most revered shrines of South American football and is inseparably bound to the history of Nacional, who have played here since 1901.
A cradle of the World Cup
Gran Parque Central is far more than an arena — it is one of the birthplaces of the FIFA World Cup. In 1930 it served as one of the venues of the very first World Cup, hosted by Uruguay, and on 13 July 1930 it staged one of the first two matches in the history of the competition. The stadium therefore fuses the everyday passion for the "tricolores" with a truly global heritage, remaining an essential pilgrimage for every lover of football history.
History
Journey through time
The history of this site runs deep. The ground was built at the turn of the 20th century and officially opened on 25 May 1900, making it one of the oldest stadiums still in use anywhere in the Americas. From 1901 it became the permanent home of Nacional.
From 1930 to the modern ground
The stadium wrote its most famous chapter in 1930, when it hosted the inaugural FIFA World Cup. On 13 July 1930 it staged one of the first two matches in the competition's history, in which the United States beat Belgium 3–0. In all the venue welcomed six matches during the tournament and witnessed the World Cup debuts of Argentina and Brazil. Over the decades it underwent numerous redevelopments — after a fire in 1911, then again in 1944, 1974 and 2005. Modernisation has continued in recent years: in 2021 the floodlighting was upgraded to 1,500 lux, and in 2022 a giant screen measuring 15.8 by 5.2 metres was installed.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at Gran Parque Central is among the most passionate in South America. Nacional's supporters, proudly known as the "tricolores" after the club's white, blue and red colours, turn the stands into a sea of flags, banners and ceaseless song that backs the team from the first minute to the last.
The Uruguayan Clásico
The high point of every season is the Clásico against age-old rivals Peñarol — one of the oldest and fiercest derbies on the planet. The clash between Nacional and Peñarol splits the entire country into two camps, and every meeting is charged with history, emotion and boundless rivalry. When the two stars of Uruguayan football collide, the intensity in the stands reaches fever pitch. Even ordinary home games are accompanied by raucous support that makes "El Parque" one of the most intimidating grounds in the country.
