Overview

About the stadium

Estádio Jornalista Edgar Augusto Proença, universally known as Mangueirão, is the largest football stadium in the state of Pará and one of the great sporting arenas of the Brazilian Amazon. Set in Belém, the gateway to the mouth of the Amazon River, it holds 53,645 spectators following a sweeping renovation completed in 2023, ranking it among the eight biggest stadiums in Brazil.

The heart of football in Pará

The ground is home above all to Belém's two giant clubs — Paysandu and Clube do Remo — whose meetings rank among the most passionate in the country. It also hosts a third club, Tuna Luso, as well as major concerts and religious gatherings.

  • Capacity: 53,645 seats
  • Opened: 4 March 1978
  • Renovation: reopened 9 April 2023
  • Home clubs: Paysandu, Remo, Tuna Luso
  • City: Belém, state of Pará, Brazil

Mangueirão is more than an arena — it is a symbol of Amazonian football, where northern Brazil's love of the game pours out at full force beneath a tropical sky.

History

Journey through time

Mangueirão's story dates to the early 1970s, when Governor Alacid Nunes pushed for a grand arena that would give Belém a stadium worthy of a regional metropolis. After several years of construction, the ground was inaugurated on 4 March 1978 and quickly became the focal point of football life across the state of Pará.

From horseshoe to modern arena

The original design came from local architect Alcyr Meira, and the stadium had a distinctive horseshoe shape. In 2002 it underwent a major rebuild that added upper tiers and an athletics track, lifting its capacity into the tens of thousands.

  • Record attendance: 65,000 for Remo vs. Paysandu on 11 July 1999
  • Original architect: Alcyr Meira
  • Modernisations: major works in 2002 and 2023

The second, decisive transformation arrived with the renovation completed in 2023, when Mangueirão reopened with a classic Re-Pa derby. The arena gained modern access-control systems, full accessibility and solar power, making it one of the most modern sporting venues in northern Brazil.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When tens of thousands of fans fill Mangueirão, it becomes one of the loudest stadiums in Brazil. The atmosphere peaks during the Re-Pa derby, the clash of age-old rivals Paysandu and Remo, which splits the entire city of Belém into two camps from childhood onward.

Re-Pa — the soul of Amazonian football

Remo's blue-and-white supporters and Paysandu's blue, white and gold faithful pack the stands with flags, drums and chants that roll out across the tropical night. The rivalry is among the oldest and most intense in Brazil.

  • Marquee event: the Re-Pa derby (Remo vs. Paysandu)
  • Post-renovation record: 54,864 spectators
  • The experience: drums, chants and the colours of both camps

Beyond football, Mangueirão also stages major concerts and religious gatherings, so its terraces know emotions other than sport. For any lover of northern Brazilian football, though, it is the derby atmosphere that delivers the unforgettable experience worth travelling to the Amazon for.
