Přehled

O stadionu

Stade El Menzah is a football stadium in the El Menzah district on the northern edge of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Built and opened in 1967, the ground holds approximately 45,000 spectators and serves as the home of Espérance Sportive de Tunis (EST), Tunisia's most decorated football club, as well as a key venue for the Tunisia national football team.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the El Menzah residential district roughly 8--10 km north of the historic centre of Tunis. The area is a well-developed northern suburb with good road links across the metropolitan area. Tunis-Carthage International Airport lies only about 7 km away, making the ground particularly convenient for international visitors arriving by air. The surrounding neighbourhood offers hotels, shopping centres and restaurants within easy reach of the stadium.

Main uses

The ground's primary tenant is Espérance Sportive de Tunis, a record-breaking club in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 and a multiple winner of the CAF Champions League. The stadium regularly hosts Tunisia national team fixtures in World Cup and AFCON qualifying rounds. Most notably, it was the venue for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations Final -- the defining moment in Tunisian football history -- and previously hosted matches during the 1965 and 1994 editions of the AFCON.

Historie

Cesta časem

Stade El Menzah was built as part of Tunisia's post-independence investment in national sports infrastructure. After the country gained independence in 1956, successive governments committed to developing modern sporting facilities, and the stadium was inaugurated in 1967 as the flagship arena of Tunisian football. Over more than five decades it has undergone several renovation cycles to remain competitive at continental level.

Construction and opening

Construction took place in the mid-to-late 1960s under state auspices, with the brief to deliver a ground capable of hosting continental and international tournaments. The design met the standards of CAF (Confédération Africaine de Football) for major event hosting. The 1967 inauguration symbolised the ambitions of the young Tunisian state in the realm of African sport and established El Menzah as the home of the national game.

Major renovations

The stadium underwent successive upgrades ahead of each major tournament it hosted. Preparations for AFCON 1994 and AFCON 2004 both triggered significant refurbishments covering lighting, player facilities, media infrastructure and seating. These works brought the ground in line with the evolving CAF and FIFA requirements for high-profile matches. Incremental improvements to the pitch surface, dressing rooms and spectator facilities have continued since.

Notable moments

The crowning moment in the stadium's history came on 2 February 2004, when Tunisia defeated Morocco 2--1 in the AFCON 2004 Final played on this pitch. It was Tunisia's first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title, celebrated by an ecstatic home crowd in one of the most emotional scenes in Tunisian sporting history. The ground had previously hosted fixtures at AFCON 1965 -- the first time Tunisia staged the continental championship -- and again at AFCON 1994, cementing its place as one of the most important arenas in African football.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Stade El Menzah is among the most intense in North African football. Supporters of Espérance Sportive de Tunis -- known by the nickname Trang -- fill the stands with red and yellow colours, incessant drumming and synchronised chants that echo around the bowl. The cross-city rivalry with Club Africain -- the so-called El Derby -- is one of the fiercest rivalries on the African continent.

Fan culture

Espérance Sportive de Tunis boasts one of the most developed supporter cultures in Africa. The principal ultras faction, Winners, organises elaborate tifo displays, coordinated chanting sections and percussion rhythms that transform El Menzah into a cauldron of noise. As the record-breaking Tunisian champions and multiple CAF Champions League winners, EST regularly draws large travelling support for continental fixtures, adding a pan-African dimension to the atmosphere. Tunisia's national team, Les Aigles de Carthage (The Eagles of Carthage), also attracts passionate full-house support whenever it plays at El Menzah.

Big matches

The undisputed high point was the AFCON 2004 Final on 2 February 2004, when Tunisia lifted the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil for the first time, defeating Morocco 2--1. The scenes inside El Menzah that evening remain the most vivid in Tunisian football memory. Continental club nights featuring Espérance in the CAF Champions League knockout rounds, and decisive World Cup qualifying matches for the national team, have also generated unforgettable atmospheres that rival any in North Africa.

How to get there

  • Light metro (Métro Léger): Tunis operates a light metro network; Line 2 serves the El Menzah area. From the central hub at Place de Barcelone the journey takes approximately 20--25 minutes.
  • Taxi / rideshare: White metered taxis or apps such as Bolt/Yassir are the most convenient option; a ride from Tunis city centre costs around 5--10 TND and takes 15--20 minutes outside peak traffic.
  • Car: Good access via the northern ring road; parking space near the stadium is limited on matchdays, so arriving early or using park-and-ride options is advisable.
  • From the airport: A taxi from Tunis-Carthage Airport takes around 15 minutes and covers roughly 7 km.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for Espérance Sportive de Tunis matches are sold at the stadium box office and via official club channels. National team fixtures are handled by the FTF (Fédération Tunisienne de Football). Organised public stadium tours are not regularly scheduled -- contact the stadium administration directly to enquire about access outside matchdays.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive? Aim to be at the ground 30--45 minutes before kick-off -- approach roads fill quickly on matchdays and entry queues can be lengthy.
  • What to wear? Summer afternoon matches see temperatures above 35 °C; lightweight clothing and sun protection are essential. Spring and autumn evening fixtures can be cool -- bring a light layer.
  • Local food: Street stalls near the stadium offer Tunisian staples -- brik (fried pastry with egg and tuna), lablebi (chickpea soup) and grilled meats are all available at affordable prices.
  • Security: Expect bag checks at the turnstiles -- leave large backpacks at your accommodation.
