City Stadium (Ostrava)

The Vítkovice stadium has stood since 1939, and in that time has grown from an interwar municipal sports ground into an arena hosting international athletics and top-flight football. The turning point was the reconstruction begun in 2012.

Construction and opening

The ground opened at the end of the 1930s as a municipal sports venue and was dual-purpose from the outset, with an athletics oval around the football pitch. That layout has stayed with it and still shapes how football is watched here.

Major renovations

The decisive rebuild began in June 2012, immediately after the 51st Golden Spike meeting. The concrete terraces of the east stand came down first and the surrounding area was reworked.

The newly reconstructed covered east stand, together with the covered main stand, provided a combined 13,000 seats. The stadium's total capacity today is 15,123, spread across four stands.

Notably, the ground stayed in operation throughout the works — football continued and the Golden Spike was held without interruption.

Notable moments

The Golden Spike has been staged here continuously since 1961 and ranks among the oldest athletics meetings of its kind. In 2018 the stadium hosted the IAAF Continental Cup.

The Vítkovice ground has an atmosphere shaped by its dual nature. The athletics oval sets the stands further from the playing surface than at a purely football stadium, but 15,123 seats across four stands create an environment that makes itself felt when the ground fills.

Fan culture

The home end belongs to the supporters of FC Baník Ostrava, a club with one of the most distinctive followings in Czechia. Baník moved its home fixtures here from the 2015/16 season and brought a crowd more closely tied to its region than most Czech clubs enjoy.

Alongside Baník, FC Vítkovice also plays here, so two different football audiences share the ground.

Athletics forms a chapter of its own. During the Golden Spike the stadium has an entirely different mood from a matchday — the crowd is more mixed and follows several disciplines at once.

Big matches

In football the biggest draws are Baník's fixtures against the Prague clubs, AC Sparta Prague and SK Slavia Prague.

The largest sporting occasion in the ground's history, however, remains the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup, alongside the annual Golden Spike, which has brought elite athletics to Ostrava since 1961.

By Czech standards the Vítkovice stadium is unusually easy to reach by car — unlike most top-flight grounds it has extensive parking on site. Public transport and rail work equally well.

How to get there

By public transport the ground is served by both trams and buses, so reaching it from central Ostrava is straightforward.

By train it is simpler still: the nearest railway station is roughly 500 metres from the stadium.

By car, the complex offers nearly 1,800 parking spaces, which is exceptional for a ground of this size. Unlike Letná or Štruncovy sady, driving here is not a problem.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for football matches are sold by the resident clubs — FC Baník Ostrava and FC Vítkovice — through their official channels. Tickets for the Golden Spike are sold separately, as it is a standalone athletics event.

The complex is run by the municipal company Vítkovice Aréna a.s., which handles information on operations and hire.

Visitor tips

• When to arrive: half an hour before a league game; allow a full day for the Golden Spike.
• How to travel: driving is fine thanks to 1,800 spaces; otherwise tram, bus or train.
• Where to sit: the main and east stands are roofed, which matters in Ostrava weather.
• What to expect: the athletics oval means a greater distance from the pitch than at a football-only ground.
