Overview

About the stadium

BC Place is a multi-use stadium set right in downtown Vancouver, Canada, at 777 Pacific Boulevard. Its defining feature is a cable-supported retractable roof that was the largest of its kind in the world when completed, with an opening measuring 100 by 85 metres. Seating 54,500 spectators, the venue serves several sports as well as major concerts and cultural events.

Home to two teams and a World Cup

The pitch is shared by Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS soccer) and the BC Lions (CFL Canadian football), and the building also hosts rugby sevens and live music. BC Place is one of the host venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, continuing a long tradition of staging marquee events. Perched beside False Creek and bordering the Yaletown neighbourhood, the stadium is easy to reach and acts as a natural hub for the city's sporting life.

History

Journey through time

BC Place opened on 19 June 1983, boasting what was then the world's largest air-supported dome, a Teflon-coated fibreglass roof similar in concept to Minneapolis's Metrodome. On 5 January 2007, accumulated snow tore the roof fabric and staff carried out a controlled deflation; the repaired panel was replaced and the roof re-inflated by 19 January.

From inflatable dome to cable roof

Following the Winter Olympics, the stadium underwent a 16-month overhaul whose centrepiece was the 2011 replacement of the air dome with a cable-supported retractable roof. The venue is woven into history as the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and in 2015 it staged the FIFA Women's World Cup Final. The complex is also home to the BC Sports Hall of Fame, honouring the province's athletic legends.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The mood at BC Place shifts with whether the roof is open or closed. On fair days the sky rolls back to reveal the surrounding skyline, while rain brings the roof shut, sealing in the noise to create a thunderous cauldron. After dark, the stadium's exterior skin glows with a colour-changing LED light show that has become a visual signature of downtown Vancouver.

Soccer and Canadian football under one roof

Vancouver Whitecaps FC supporters bring European-style drumming and chants from their supporters' section, while BC Lions games carry the more relaxed, family atmosphere of Canadian football. The giant centre-hung video board ranks among the largest in North America and heightens the spectacle. Being right downtown means the buzz around the stadium keeps pulsing long after the final whistle.
