Overview
About the stadium
The Estádio Manoel Barradas, universally known as the Barradão, is a football stadium in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and the home ground of Esporte Clube Vitória. With a capacity of roughly 34,535 spectators, it stands out among Brazilian venues because it is owned and operated directly by the club — a rarity in a country where most major stadiums belong to the state or the city.
A club-owned ground in the heart of Salvador
The Barradão sits in the Canabrava district in the south of Salvador and is woven tightly into the identity of the red-and-black Vitória. Its playing field measures 105 × 68 metres.
- Home club: Esporte Clube Vitória (rubro-negro)
- Capacity: ~34,535 seats
- Owner & operator: EC Vitória
- Location: Canabrava district, Salvador, Bahia
The stadium hosts matches in the Campeonato Baiano state league, Brazil's Série A and B, and cup competitions, and is the stage for the fierce Ba-Vi city derby.
History
Journey through time
The Barradão was inaugurated on 9 November 1986 with an opening fixture in which Vitória drew 1–1 with Santos. The stadium grew out of the club's ambition to own a modern ground of its own, freeing it from reliance on public arenas.
Construction, naming and renovations
The ground is named after Manoel Barradas, a long-serving counsellor and director of Vitória. After early improvements, the venue was reopened on 25 August 1991. The record attendance of 51,756 spectators was set in 1999, when Vitória beat Atlético Mineiro 2–1.
- Opened: 1986; reinaugurated 1991
- Record attendance: 51,756 (1999)
- Ownership: club-owned from the outset
Successive modernisations, safety upgrades to the stands and improved facilities have brought the Barradão into line with contemporary standards, while club ownership remains its defining — and, in Brazil, rare — characteristic.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at the Barradão is among the loudest in northeastern Brazil. Vitória's torcida fills the stands with red and black, waving flags and singing throughout the match as the stadium turns into a sea of rubro-negro colour.
Ba-Vi: one of Brazil's hottest derbies
The climax of every season is the Ba-Vi derby against arch-rivals Esporte Clube Bahia, one of the oldest and most passionate derbies in the country. When Vitória host Bahia at the Barradão, the city of Salvador splits in two and the tension on the terraces and the pitch reaches boiling point.
- Colours: red and black (rubro-negro)
- Big derby: Ba-Vi vs. Esporte Clube Bahia
- Home advantage: tight stands close to the pitch
Club ownership gives the ground an intimate, almost family feel, where generations of supporters genuinely feel at home.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The Barradão lies in the Canabrava district in the south of Salvador, about 20 km from the historic Pelourinho centre. Reaching the stadium on matchday takes a little planning because of traffic.
Getting there and matchday tips
- Location: Canabrava district, Salvador, Bahia
- Transport: city buses and taxis/ride apps are the most reliable; parking areas are available nearby
- Matchday: arrive early, especially for the Ba-Vi derby, when traffic is heavy
- Tickets: buy through Vitória's official channels
- Nearby: Salvador's beaches, the historic Pelourinho centre and the Mercado Modelo are worth a visit on a longer stay
Wear light clothing for Bahia's tropical climate and expect humid heat. The atmosphere is best enjoyed in the home torcida sectors.
