WWK Arena was conceived as a new-build replacement for FC Augsburg's ageing home, the Rosenaustadion, which could no longer meet modern football standards. Crucially, the club invested in its new home before winning promotion to the Bundesliga, demonstrating long-term planning ambition.

The stadium was completed and officially opened in 2009. Name changes

The arena has carried three commercial names since opening. From 2009 to 2011 it was known as impuls arena; from 2011 to 2015 it bore the name SGL arena, after carbon-fibre manufacturer SGL Carbon. Since 2015 the ground has been called WWK Arena, in partnership with Bavarian insurer WWK Versicherungen.

The stadium's most significant chapter opened when FC Augsburg won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history in the 2010/11 season, bringing top-flight football to the arena.
