Overview
About the stadium
Arena das Dunas is a modern football stadium in Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil. Opened in January 2014, it was one of the twelve venues for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and today seats around 31,375 spectators (temporarily expanded to roughly 42,000 for the tournament). Its defining feature is a roof made of individual, free-standing "petals" inspired by the sand dunes and landscape surrounding Natal.
Venue at a glance
The stadium was designed by architect Christopher Lee of Populous and replaced the demolished old Machadão ground. Since the World Cup it has primarily served local clubs, most notably América de Natal and ABC, and also hosts concerts and other major events. With its elegant white structure and modern facilities, it ranks among the most attractive arenas in northeastern Brazil.
History
Journey through time
Arena das Dunas was built between 2011 and 2013 to replace the beloved but ageing Machadão stadium, which was demolished to make way for it. The project, costing roughly R$400 million, was completed and inaugurated on 26 January 2014, just months before the World Cup kicked off.
The 2014 World Cup
Natal hosted four group-stage matches: Mexico beat Cameroon (1–0), the United States edged Ghana (2–1), Japan drew with Greece (0–0), and Uruguay defeated Italy (1–0) in a famous clash that helped eliminate the Italians. The signature roof of free-standing "petals", conceived by Christopher Lee of Populous, became one of the visual symbols of the tournament. After the finals the capacity was reduced to its regular 31,375 seats, and the arena became home to América de Natal and ABC. In 2016 Brazil beat Bolivia 5–0 here in World Cup qualifying.
Atmosphere
Matchday
On matchdays Arena das Dunas comes alive with the colours of its local clubs and the warmth typical of northeastern Brazil. The white "petal" roof casts welcome shade on hot afternoons, and at night floodlighting turns it into a glowing landmark over Natal.
Football beneath the dunes
The atmosphere is driven above all by the derby between rivals ABC and América de Natal, when the stands fill with drums, chants and flags. The modern oval bowl offers excellent sightlines from every seat, and the steep tiers bring fans close to the action. Natal, the "city of the sun" surrounded by sand dunes and beaches, lends a relaxed, seaside mood to any visit. Even for smaller league fixtures, the venue offers the passionate Brazilian football experience.
