Overview
About the stadium
Estádio Amigão, officially the Estádio Governador Ernani Sátyro, is the largest football ground in the interior of Brazil's Paraíba state and the beating heart of sporting life in Campina Grande. With a capacity of 35,000, it is home to the city's two big clubs — Campinense and Treze — whose meetings rank among the fiercest derbies in the country's northeast.
A symbol of interior Paraíba
The nickname "Amigão" (Big Friend) recalls Governor Ernani Sátyro, who addressed his supporters as "old friends." Standing far from the coastal capital of João Pessoa, the stadium has become a symbol of pride for the sertão, the region's rugged backcountry.
- Capacity: 35,000
- Opened: 8 March 1975
- Home clubs: Campinense and Treze
- Marquee event: the Clássico dos Maiorais derby
Set in the state's second-largest city, the Amigão hosts Campeonato Paraibano state-league fixtures and national competitions, filling up reliably whenever the big games come around.
History
Journey through time
The Amigão took just fourteen months to build and was inaugurated on 8 March 1975, at the close of the term of Governor Ernani Ayres Sátyro e Sousa, whose name it officially bears. It was raised to answer the swelling football passion of Campina Grande, where two traditional rivals had long lacked a great stage on which to meet.
From inauguration to records
The opening match between Campinense and Botafogo ended in a goalless draw. The first goal followed on 16 March 1975, scored by Campinense's Pedrinho Cangula.
- Record attendance: 41,149 (7 February 1982)
- That match: Flamengo beat Treze 3–1
- 2007: the ground hosted Nacional de Patos' home games in the final stage of Brazil's third division
Over the decades the Amigão has undergone refurbishments and safety inspections that have at times temporarily reduced its sanctioned capacity, yet its standing as the great arena of interior Paraíba remains intact.
Atmosphere
Matchday
When the Campinense and Treze camps converge on the Amigão, its concrete terraces become a sea of red-and-white against green-and-white. The Clássico dos Maiorais — the derby between Campina Grande's two "greatest" clubs — is among the most intense spectacles in the northeast, and the atmosphere can raise goosebumps on even the most hardened fans.
The passion of the interior
Drums, flags and chants roll across the whole ground from the opening minute. For the people of the sertão, the derby is a matter of honour and a seasonal climax awaited all year.
- Derby: Clássico dos Maiorais (Campinense vs Treze)
- Colours: Campinense red-and-white, Treze green-and-white
- Highlight: the Campeonato Paraibano
Even for state-league matches, far from the glare of the big metropolises, the Amigão can become a cauldron that explains why football in Paraíba is a genuine religion.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The Amigão sits in Campina Grande, Paraíba's second-largest city, roughly 120 km west of the capital, João Pessoa. The city is a transport hub for the interior, making it easy to reach by car or bus.
Getting to the stadium
Campina Grande is linked to the coast by the BR-230 (Transamazônica) highway; the drive from João Pessoa takes about an hour and a half. Long-distance coaches also serve the city from across the northeast.
- City: Campina Grande, Paraíba
- From João Pessoa: ~120 km via the BR-230 (~1.5 h)
- Airport: Aeroporto Presidente João Suassuna (CPV)
- Tip: arrive early on derby day to beat the crowds
