Overview

About the stadium

Estádio Albertão, officially the Estádio Governador Alberto Tavares Silva, is the largest football stadium in the Brazilian state of Piauí and the principal sporting arena of Teresina, the state capital. With a capacity of 44,200 spectators, it dominates the sporting landscape of northeastern Brazil and serves as the home ground for local clubs as well as cup and national fixtures.

The home of Teresina football

The stadium is the traditional fortress of Piauí's leading clubs. The most frequent tenants are:

  • River Atlético Clube (River-PI) — one of the state's most successful clubs
  • Esporte Clube Flamengo (Flamengo-PI) — a fiercely supported local rival

The nickname Albertão derives from the governor's name and has become universal among supporters. The arena stages the decisive matches of the Campeonato Piauiense state championship and also hosts national-competition games whenever a Piauí club climbs into the wider Brazilian football pyramid.

History

Journey through time

Estádio Albertão was inaugurated on 26 August 1973 and was conceived from the outset as the largest and most modern football arena in the state of Piauí. It was built by the state government as a symbol of development and sporting ambition for a rapidly growing Teresina.

Named after the governor

The stadium bears the name of Alberto Tavares Silva, who was governor of Piauí from 1971 to 1975, the period during which it was constructed. The popular name Albertão is an affectionate diminutive of his name.

  • The opening was marred by tragedy: during the inauguration a panic broke out when someone shouted that the stadium was collapsing — the vibrations were in fact caused by a low-flying aircraft. Eight people died in the crush, making it one of the worst disasters in the history of Brazilian football.

The stadium has since been refurbished and remains an indispensable hub of football in Piauí, hosting finals and the state's most important derbies.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at the Albertão is unmistakably northeastern — fervent, loud and driven by the intense love of football felt across Piauí. On state-championship days and city derbies, the stands become a sea of colour, drums and chants that relentlessly urge on the home sides.

State football passion

The high points of the season are the clashes of the Campeonato Piauiense, which bring the state's greatest rivals together. The most eagerly awaited fixture is the derby between:

  • River-PI and Flamengo-PI — a match that divides the city and the whole state

For these games the Albertão fills with fans from across Teresina and surrounding towns. The two supporters' ends compete in volume, large banners are waved, and the terraces pulse with rhythms typical of Brazil's northeast. Despite the tropical heat, the spectacle here ranks among the most passionate in the region and lends every big match an unmistakable charge.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

Estádio Albertão lies in Teresina, the capital of Piauí state in northeastern Brazil. The city is a transport hub of the interior, and the stadium is easily reached from most neighbourhoods.

Practical information for visitors

  • Location: within the city of Teresina; reach it easily by car, taxi or ride-hailing apps (Uber/99)
  • Getting there: city buses serve the surrounding area; expect heavier traffic on matchdays
  • Climate and heat: Teresina is one of Brazil's hottest cities — bring water, a hat and sunscreen, especially for afternoon kick-offs
  • Matchday: arrive early, as queues at the gates can be long before derbies
  • Nearby: central Teresina with its restaurants, the confluence of the Parnaíba and Poti rivers, and local markets offering typical northeastern cuisine

For the best experience, choose an evening fixture, when the worst of the heat eases and the atmosphere in the stands peaks.
