Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium

The stadium was built as a flagship state project in the years following Cameroonian independence and officially opened in 1972. It was named in honour of Ahmadou Ahidjo, the first president of the Federal Republic of Cameroon, who governed the country from independence in 1961 until his resignation in 1982. Dedicating a national stadium to the serving head of state followed a common practice in post-colonial African nations.

Construction and opening

Designed as a multi-purpose venue, the stadium was constructed to international standards of the early 1970s with an original capacity of approximately 60,000 spectators, making it one of the largest stadiums in sub-Saharan Africa at the time of its inauguration. The facility was equipped to host not only football but also athletics competitions and major state ceremonies, reflecting its intended role as a symbol of national pride.

Major renovations

Over the decades the stadium underwent several rounds of refurbishment targeting safety improvements, lighting upgrades and facility modernisation. Capacity was revised downward to 38,560 following updated safety regulations. The most comprehensive recent works took place in preparation for AFCON 2021 (held in January--February 2022 due to COVID-19 postponement), when Cameroon as host nation invested substantially in stadium infrastructure to meet CAF requirements.

Notable moments

The stadium has staged several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, most notably serving as a central venue in 1972 and as the main arena for the 1988 edition. In the 2022 AFCON hosted on home soil, Cameroon progressed to the semi-final, generating enormous domestic enthusiasm. Local club Canon Yaoundé celebrated their African Cup of Champions Clubs triumphs of 1971 and 1978 here, cementing the stadium's place in continental football history.

Cameroonian football carries a continent-wide reputation for passion and achievement. The national team, nicknamed the 'Indomitable Lions', is the most decorated in AFCON history with five titles, and their famous run to the 1990 FIFA World Cup quarter-final -- the first African side to reach that stage -- remains a defining moment in African football.

The atmosphere at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo reflects the exuberant Cameroonian supporter culture -- rhythmic drumming, spontaneous chanting and the green, red and yellow colours of the national flag. The local rivalry between Canon Yaoundé and Tonnerre Yaoundé is one of the most fiercely contested in the capital, with both clubs drawing loyal and vocal fan groups. The stadium's most memorable chapter remains its repeated role as an AFCON host venue. The 1988 final played here ended in a dramatic penalty shootout as Cameroon lost to Nigeria, yet the occasion cemented the arena's continental prestige. The AFCON 2022 group stage and knockout rounds brought packed stands of green-and-red-clad supporters who drove the Indomitable Lions all the way to the semi-final, producing some of the loudest and most electric nights in the stadium's history.

Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo is located in central Yaoundé, roughly 3 km from the main commercial district around Place Ahmadou Ahidjo. Yaoundé is served by Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport, situated approximately 25 km from the city centre, with connections to major African hubs and several European cities.

• Yellow taxi (taxi jaune): The ubiquitous shared taxis are the most practical option; a journey from the centre takes 10--15 minutes and costs around 500--1,000 XAF (approximately EUR 0.75--1.50).
• Mototaxi (benskin): The motorcycle taxis typical of Yaoundé offer the fastest door-to-door service for individuals and are very affordable.
• Car: The stadium is accessible via the main city thoroughfares; parking is available nearby, though arriving early on matchdays is strongly recommended.
• On foot: From central hotels the stadium is reachable on foot in under 30 minutes.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for Cameroon national team fixtures are sold through FECAFOOT (Fédération Camerounaise de Football) and at stadium box offices on matchday. Tickets for Canon Yaoundé and Tonnerre Yaoundé league games are typically available directly at the ground. Guided stadium tours outside of match periods are not regularly offered.

• When to arrive? Aim to be at the ground 45 minutes before kick-off -- surrounding streets fill quickly with food vendors, souvenir sellers and drummers creating a vivid pre-match scene.
• What to wear? Light clothing for daytime matches; Yaoundé sits above 700 m altitude, so evenings are noticeably cooler than on the coast -- bring a light layer for night games.
• Safety: Stay in groups and keep valuables secure; the central district around the stadium is considered relatively safe for visitors, but normal urban precautions apply.
• Local food: Street stalls near the stadium offer Cameroonian staples -- ndole (bitter-leaf stew with peanuts), brochettes (grilled skewers) and fresh tropical fruit at very accessible prices.
