O stadionu

Tose Proeski Arena (Macedonian: Национална арена Тоше Проески) is the national football stadium of North Macedonia, located in the capital Skopje. With a capacity of 33,460 seats it is the largest stadium in the country and the primary home of the North Macedonia national football team. Originally opened in 1947, the arena underwent extensive modernisation over the decades. Since 2019 it has carried the name of celebrated Macedonian singer Toshe Proeski (1981--2007), one of the most beloved pop voices in the post-Yugoslav region.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is situated in a multi-sport complex in the south-eastern part of Skopje, near the Cair district, approximately 2 km from the city centre. The complex also hosts other sports halls and an athletics track, forming the main sporting hub of the Macedonian capital. City bus connections from the centre are available and the venue is also reachable on foot along the River Vardar embankment.

Home clubs and national team

Alongside the national team, the arena serves as home ground for both FK Vardar -- the most decorated club in Macedonian football history -- and FK Rabotnicki. All three stakeholders share the venue, making it the focal point of top-level football in the country. The national side, nicknamed The Lynxes, has grown in profile in recent years, most notably with its first-ever appearance at a major tournament at UEFA EURO 2020.

Foundation and early decades

The stadium was first opened in 1947, shortly after the Second World War, when Macedonia was a constituent republic of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. For several decades it served as the primary football venue in the Macedonian part of the federation. Following Macedonian independence in 1991, the ground became the home of the newly established Football Federation of Macedonia and the newly formed national team.

Name changes -- from Filip II to Toshe Proeski

For many years the stadium was known as Stadion Filip II Makedonski (Philip II of Macedon Stadium), in reference to the ancient Macedonian king Philip II, father of Alexander the Great and a potent symbol of Macedonian national identity. In 2019 the decision was made to rename the arena in honour of Toshe Proeski (14 January 1981 -- 16 October 2007). Proeski was one of the most famous musical artists to emerge from the former Yugoslavia -- a tenor of extraordinary range widely dubbed 'the Elvis of the Balkans'. His death in a road accident at the age of 26 was mourned by millions across the region. The renaming was seen as both a cultural tribute and a statement of contemporary Macedonian identity.

UEFA Super Cup 2017

The most prestigious event in the arena's history was the 2017 UEFA Super Cup, played on 8 August 2017. Skopje was chosen to host the match between Real Madrid (UEFA Champions League winners) and Manchester United (UEFA Europa League winners). Real Madrid won 2-1: goals from Casemiro and Isco secured the trophy, with Romelu Lukaku pulling one back for United. It was the first major UEFA final staged in North Macedonia, bringing global football stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric to the Skopje pitch and putting the arena firmly on the European football map.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

National identity and match-day atmosphere

The atmosphere at Toshe Proeski Arena is deeply bound up with North Macedonian national identity. National team fixtures rank among the most significant sporting events in the country: the stands fill with Macedonian sun flags, chants ring out in both Macedonian and Albanian reflecting the country's multiethnic character, and the shared passion for football provides one of the most visible points of unity between communities. Although North Macedonia is a smaller footballing nation, its supporters are known for intense and loyal backing.

FK Vardar and FK Rabotnicki supporters

Club football brings its own distinct atmosphere. FK Vardar's supporters group Komiti is among the most vocal and visually creative fan sections in the Balkans, known for elaborate choreographies and sustained chanting. FK Rabotnicki fans provide a rival chorus. The Skopje derby between the two clubs is the most charged domestic fixture in North Macedonian football, and the arena can feel transformed into something much larger than its everyday scale when both sets of supporters pack the stands.

The Super Cup as a landmark moment

The 2017 UEFA Super Cup remains the defining atmospheric event in the arena's history. Watching Real Madrid and Manchester United -- two of the world's most supported clubs -- contest a trophy in Skopje was an extraordinary experience for Macedonian football fans. Stars of the calibre of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba on the same pitch in this compact Balkan capital created a night the country's football community has not forgotten.
