O stadionu

Tehelné pole -- officially the Národný futbalový štadión (National Football Stadium, NFŠ) -- is a football stadium in the Nové Mesto district of Bratislava, Slovakia, approximately 5 km north-east of the city centre. Opened in 2019 on the site of the historic 1939 ground, the fully rebuilt arena holds 22,500 spectators to UEFA Category 4 standard. It serves as the home ground of SK Slovan Bratislava and as the principal venue for the Slovak national football team.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the north-eastern part of Bratislava in the Tehelné pole neighbourhood -- the name derives from the historic brickworks (tehelňa = brickyard) that once characterised this area. Residential blocks and supplementary sports facilities surround the ground. The city's tram and bus network provides straightforward access from the centre in approximately 15--20 minutes.

Main uses

The stadium fulfils a dual national role: it is the everyday home of SK Slovan Bratislava for Fortuna Liga fixtures, domestic cup ties and European competition including the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League group stages, and the primary venue for Slovak national team qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.

Historie

Cesta časem

The story of Tehelné pole spans more than eighty years of Bratislava football, from the construction of the original stadium in 1939 to the opening of a fully rebuilt arena in 2019 on the same plot of land.

Construction and opening

The first stadium on this site was completed in 1939, making it one of the largest football grounds in Central Europe at the time. Named after the neighbourhood, it quickly became the focal point of Bratislava football and, within the federal structure of Czechoslovakia, served as a major venue for both SK Slovan Bratislava and the Czechoslovak national team. At its peak the ground accommodated crowds exceeding 50,000 spectators.

Major renovations and rebuild

After decades of use and incremental upgrades, the aging infrastructure no longer met the requirements of modern European football. Slovak football authorities decided to demolish the historic structure entirely and replace it with a purpose-built modern arena. Construction of the new Národný futbalový štadión (NFŠ) took place between 2015 and 2019, and the ground was officially opened in 2019 to full UEFA Category 4 specification. The new stadium retains the historic Tehelné pole address while delivering contemporary facilities for players, media and supporters.

Notable moments

The original ground at Tehelné pole witnessed the greatest moment in Slovak club football history: SK Slovan Bratislava's triumph in the 1969 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Slovan defeated FC Barcelona 3--2 in the final, becoming the only Czechoslovak or Slovak club ever to win a major UEFA trophy. The ground also hosted countless Czechoslovak and Slovak international fixtures across its eight decades of operation. The new NFŠ opened with European ambitions realised swiftly -- Slovan competed in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Tehelné pole draws on more than eighty years of football tradition on this site and the passionate supporter culture of SK Slovan Bratislava, the most decorated club in Slovak football history.

Fan culture

SK Slovan Bratislava -- known as the Belasí (the Blue-Whites) -- commands the largest and most loyal support base in Slovakia. The ultras group Žlté Nebezpečenstvo (Yellow Danger) leads organised support with flags, choreos and sustained singing throughout matches. Rivalry with FK Dukla Bratislava fuels the city derby, while Slovan supporters also maintain a strong collective memory of the shared Czechoslovak football era when encounters with Prague and Brno clubs carried special weight.

Big matches

The new NFŠ made an immediate impression at European level. Slovan's participation in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage -- their first appearance in the competition's group phase -- brought matches against Inter Milan and Chelsea FC to Bratislava, drawing sell-out crowds and generating exceptional atmosphere. The stadium has since hosted multiple European campaigns. National team fixtures -- particularly World Cup and European Championship qualifiers -- are among the most attended sporting events in Slovakia each year, with vocal Slovak support creating an intense home advantage.
