Přehled
O stadionu
Wankdorf Stadium is a modern football ground in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, and the country's second-largest all-seater football stadium with a capacity of 32,000. It is the home of BSC Young Boys, one of Switzerland's most successful clubs in recent years. The stadium opened in 2005 on the exact site of the legendary Wankdorfstadion, which hosted the famous 1954 FIFA World Cup Final.
Location and surroundings
The stadium is situated in the Wankdorf district of Bern, approximately 2 km east of the historic city centre. A tram stop stands directly outside the main entrance, making the venue highly accessible. The surroundings are predominantly commercial and industrial, with a large shopping centre immediately adjacent to the complex.
Main uses
The stadium serves primarily as the home ground of BSC Young Boys for the Swiss Super League and European competitions. It hosted group-stage matches at UEFA Euro 2008 and served as a venue for UEFA Women's Euro 2025. The arena also stages large-scale concerts and athletics events.
Historie
Cesta časem
The history of Wankdorf Stadium is inseparable from the legacy of its predecessor — one of the most storied sporting venues in Central Europe.
The historic Wankdorfstadion (1925-2001)
The original Wankdorfstadion opened in 1925 and hosted decades of Swiss football history. Its defining moment came on 4 July 1954, when it staged the FIFA World Cup Final between West Germany and Hungary — an event immortalised as the 'Miracle of Bern'. Hungary, widely regarded as the greatest team in the world, entered the match as overwhelming favourites having beaten West Germany 8-3 in the group stage. West Germany won 3-2 in one of sport's greatest upsets. The result stunned the football world and remains one of the most dramatic reversals in sporting history. The original stadium was demolished in 2001.
Construction and opening
The new stadium was built directly on the site of its historic predecessor. Construction ran from 2003 to 2005 and the arena opened in 2005 under the name Stade de Suisse Wankdorf. The naming rights deal expired in 2020, after which the stadium reverted to its current name Stadion Wankdorf.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Matchday at Wankdorf Stadium blends the intensity of BSC Young Boys' loyal support base with the intimacy of a compact modern arena and the historical weight of the site itself.
Fan culture
BSC Young Boys supporters are among the most vocal in Swiss football. The standing section behind one of the goals — the active ultras block — produces sustained chanting, flares, and a striking visual display of yellow and black throughout the match. The club draws its core support from Bern and the surrounding region, giving the ground a strong local identity. Young Boys' sustained Super League dominance since 2018 has boosted attendances and sharpened the atmosphere at rivalry fixtures.
Big matches
In summer 2008, the stadium hosted group-stage matches at UEFA Euro 2008 featuring Spain, Russia, and Greece, drawing large international crowds to Bern. More recently, BSC Young Boys' repeated Swiss title wins have brought regular UEFA Champions League group-stage nights to Wankdorf, where the stadium fills to capacity against Europe's elite clubs. The historical resonance of the 'Miracle of Bern' adds an extra layer of significance to visiting the site that many supporters find unexpectedly moving.
