Přehled

O stadionu

Red Bull Arena is a modern all-seater football stadium in the municipality of Wals-Siezenheim, on the south-western outskirts of Salzburg, Austria. With a capacity of 31,895 seats, it is one of the most modern venues in the Alpine region and serves as the home ground of FC Red Bull Salzburg, the most successful club in the history of Austrian football. The stadium was completed in 2003 and in 2008 served as one of the host venues for UEFA EURO 2008.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the municipality of Wals-Siezenheim, bordering Salzburg to the west -- approximately 5 km from the historic city centre and less than 3 km from Salzburg Airport (SZG). This makes it one of the most logistically convenient stadiums in Central Europe: flying in, travelling to the ground and attending a match can be accomplished without venturing into the city centre at all. The surrounding landscape blends Alpine foothills with modern development, and on a clear day the tribunes offer views of the Salzburg Alps.

Main uses

The stadium is primarily the home ground of FC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. It hosted group-stage matches and a quarter-final at UEFA EURO 2008, cementing its place in the history of major European tournaments. The complex includes modern training facilities, conference spaces and is used for commercial and social events. For UEFA competition matches, the stadium is configured in accordance with UEFA regulations, welcoming Champions League and Europa League opponents on a regular basis.

Historie

Cesta časem

The need for a new stadium in Salzburg became clear at the turn of the millennium, when the old Stadion Lehen in the city centre was deemed insufficient in both capacity and infrastructure for modern football. The decision to build a completely new venue outside the city was part of a broader strategy that characterised football infrastructure development across Europe at the time.

Construction

Construction began in 2002 and the stadium was officially opened in 2003. The project was designed from the outset with the co-hosting ambition of Austria and Switzerland in mind: Salzburg was one of four Austrian cities bidding to stage matches at UEFA EURO 2008. The stadium was built to meet the highest UEFA requirements for host arenas -- fully covered stands, expanded media facilities and VIP hospitality areas.

EURO 2008 and renaming

For the duration of the tournament the stadium carried the official designation EM Stadion Wals-Siezenheim (from 2003 to 2009). It hosted three group-stage matches and one quarter-final. The most watched fixture was Germany vs. Croatia (1:2) in Group B, and the quarter-final between Turkey and Croatia (1:1, pens 3:1). After the conclusion of EURO 2008, the stadium reverted to its commercial name Red Bull Arena, which it has carried since 2007 following Red Bull's acquisition of FC Salzburg.

Major renovations

Over the years the stadium has undergone updates focused on technological modernisation -- LED floodlighting installation, hybrid grass pitch systems and expanded media infrastructure. The arena has been repeatedly certified for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competition, which FC Red Bull Salzburg has entered regularly since 2018.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Red Bull Arena is shaped by a paradox familiar to modern football: a stadium owned by the Red Bull corporation, yet home to a fan base fiercely proud of its local identity and its rivalry with traditional clubs. That tension -- or perhaps because of it -- makes a matchday in Salzburg an unforgettable experience.

Fan culture

FC Red Bull Salzburg supporters are among the most vocal in Austria. The ultras group Red Army organises choreographed tifo displays and sustained drumming that generate an atmosphere comparable to top Bundesliga venues. A specific cultural layer is the ongoing friction between the club's Red Bull identity and a section of the local football community that rejects the corporate branding and retains loyalty to the original SV Austria Salzburg (now competing in lower divisions). This cultural tension is an intrinsic part of Salzburg football's identity. The Champions League campaigns that Salzburg has contested since the 2018/19 season have attracted a new generation of younger fans and elevated the arena to a recognised European venue.

Big matches

Among the most memorable occasions are the UEFA Champions League home fixtures of the 2019/20 season, when Salzburg qualified from the group stage for the first time in their history -- the home fixture against Liverpool FC (3:4) ranks as one of the most emotionally charged nights the arena has witnessed. From EURO 2008, the quarter-final Turkey vs. Croatia (1:1, pens 3:1) and the Group D fixture Germany vs. Croatia (1:2) demonstrated the stadium filled to capacity with an international audience.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Red Bull Arena is located in the municipality of Wals-Siezenheim, and its proximity to Salzburg Airport is one of the greatest practical advantages for international visitors.

How to get there

  • By plane: Salzburg Airport (SZG) is approximately 3 km from the stadium -- making this one of the most airport-adjacent major stadiums in Europe.
  • By bus / tram: Direct public transport links from Salzburg city centre (trolleybus line or tram line 1 with connection) reach the stadium in approximately 20 minutes.
  • By car: The stadium is accessible from motorway A1 (Salzburg-West exit); parking is available at the stadium and in surrounding areas.
  • By train: Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is well connected to both Austrian and German rail networks; from the station the stadium is reachable by public transport in approximately 25 minutes.
  • Walking / cycling: From the outer districts of Salzburg the stadium is accessible via the cycle path along the River Salzach.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for FC Red Bull Salzburg matches are available online through the club's official website and at the stadium box office. For Champions League fixtures, advance purchase is strongly recommended -- demand consistently exceeds supply. The stadium offers guided tours (Stadionführung) for the public on non-matchdays; details are available on the club's website.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive? Allow at least 45 minutes before kick-off -- public transport services are busy on matchdays and stadium entry queues take time.
  • Weather: Salzburg has an Alpine climate -- even in summer, evenings can be cool; bring a jacket or an extra layer.
  • Around the stadium: Restaurants and bars near the arena are suitable for pre-match food and drinks; Salzburg city centre with its historic old town, Mozart landmarks and excellent gastronomy is just 10--15 minutes away by public transport.
  • Wider travel: Salzburg is superbly connected from Munich by train (approximately 1.5 hours) -- combining a city break in Salzburg with a matchday at Red Bull Arena is an ideal itinerary for Central European football travel.
