Přehled
O stadionu
Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán is the home ground of Sevilla FC and one of the most celebrated football arenas in southern Spain. Situated in the Nervión district of Seville, the stadium has carried the name of club president Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán since its inauguration on 14 September 1958. With a current capacity of 43,883 seats, it is the largest stadium in Andalusia dedicated to a single club.
Location and surroundings
The ground is embedded in the heart of Nervión, roughly 2 kilometres from Seville's historic centre. Unlike stadiums built on urban fringes, Pizjuán is surrounded by residential streets, shops, and bars — the noise of approaching crowds fills the neighbourhood long before kick-off. This intimate urban setting is a key ingredient in the stadium's fearsome matchday atmosphere.
Main uses
The stadium serves as the home arena for Sevilla FC in La Liga and domestic cup competitions. It has repeatedly hosted finals of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, establishing it as one of Europe's most significant cup venues. The ground also staged 1982 FIFA World Cup group-stage matches and has hosted Spanish national team internationals.
Historie
Cesta časem
The vision for a new stadium dates back to 1937, when club president Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán purchased land in the Nervión district with the explicit intention of building a world-class arena. The Second World War and Spain's difficult post-war economy delayed the project by nearly two decades.
Construction and opening
In 1954 the club held an architectural competition, won by Manuel Muñoz Monasterio — the same architect responsible for Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu. Construction proceeded through the late 1950s and the stadium was inaugurated on 14 September 1958. Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán himself never saw his vision completed; he died in 1956, two years before the opening, and the club named the arena in his permanent honour. The original capacity exceeded 65,000 spectators.
Key renovations
The most substantial upgrade came ahead of the 1982 FIFA World Cup, when the ground was adapted to meet FIFA standards; capacity briefly surpassed 68,000. Over subsequent decades, standing terraces were progressively replaced with seats, reducing the total to 43,883. In 2020, Sevilla FC launched an ambitious renovation project — to be carried out without temporary relocation — aimed at raising capacity to approximately 55,000 and delivering modern facilities across all stands.
Notable moments
Pizjuán hosted group-stage fixtures at the 1982 World Cup and has served as the backdrop for many of Sevilla FC's European adventures. The ground witnessed the club's celebrated runs through the UEFA Cup and Europa League, cementing its place in the history of Spanish and European football.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán is widely regarded as one of the most intimidating grounds in La Liga. The tightly packed stands, urban location, and fiercely loyal support combine to create an environment that has unsettled some of Europe's biggest clubs over the decades. Noise from the terraces bounces off the low roof and envelops the pitch with an oppressive wall of sound.
Fan culture
Sevilla FC supporters — sevillistas — take enormous pride in the club's European record, particularly its unparalleled success in the UEFA Cup and Europa League. The biggest fixture in any season is El Gran Derbi — the Seville derby against Real Betis, played alternately at Pizjuán and at Estadio Benito Villamarín. Derby days transform the entire city: the red-and-white of Sevilla and the green-and-white of Betis divide every street and bar. The most vocal support is concentrated in the Gol Norte and Gol Sur stands behind the goals, where the club's ultras groups maintain constant noise throughout the match.
Big matches
Pizjuán's greatest nights have come in European competition. Sevilla FC have used the roar of Nervión to overturn deficits and eliminate celebrated opponents across multiple UEFA Cup and Europa League campaigns. Matches against Real Madrid and Barcelona at Pizjuán consistently rank among La Liga's most-watched fixtures globally. The stadium's combination of compact geometry and passionate crowd produces an atmosphere that rivals — and often exceeds — grounds twice its size.
