Přehled
O stadionu
AK Bars Arena is a multi-purpose football stadium in Kazan, the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan. With a capacity of 45,379 seats, it opened in 2013 as the home ground of FC Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League. The stadium holds UEFA Category 4 status — the highest tier — and was designed by British firm Populous.
Location and surroundings
The stadium is situated on the north-western edge of Kazan, close to the Kazanka River, approximately 5 km from the historic city centre and Kazan Kremlin. The immediate surroundings consist of modern sporting and recreational infrastructure developed for the 2013 Summer Universiade. The stadium commands a prominent presence across the flat open terrain, with parkland buffering it from nearby residential areas.
Main uses
The stadium is the primary home venue for FC Rubin Kazan across all domestic competitions. It hosted 6 matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, including the Round of 16 fixture Spain vs. Russia, as well as group-stage matches at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. It served as a central athletics and football venue during the 2013 Summer Universiade.
Historie
Cesta časem
The construction of AK Bars Arena was central to Kazan's ambition to transform itself into one of Russia's leading cities for major international sporting events in the 21st century.
Construction and opening
The stadium was designed by Populous, the British architecture firm specialising in sports venues. Construction ran from 2010 to 2013, and the stadium officially opened on 14 June 2013, just ahead of the Summer Universiade. A notable technical distinction is the installation of what was at the time the world's largest external screen on the stadium's facade. Total investment exceeded 14 billion roubles.
Major renovations
Ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the stadium underwent infrastructure and back-of-house upgrades to meet FIFA requirements. Minor capacity adjustments were made for the tournament. Following the World Cup, the venue was renamed from Kazan Arena to AK Bars Arena under a naming-rights agreement with AK Bars Bank, the major Tatarstan-based financial group.
Notable moments
The most consequential match in the stadium's history was the 2018 World Cup Round of 16 clash between Spain and Russia — the host nation caused a major upset, drawing 1-1 after extra time and advancing on penalties to the quarter-finals. The 2017 Confederations Cup brought the eventual champions Germany to Kazan for their opening group game. The 2013 Universiade marked the stadium's debut on an international stage.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The matchday atmosphere at AK Bars Arena is variable — Russian club football generally struggles with attendance, but major international tournaments demonstrated the full potential of the venue when filled to capacity.
Fan culture
FC Rubin Kazan commands a loyal but modest local following. The club reached its peak in the late 2000s, winning the Russian Premier League title in 2008 and 2009 and reaching the UEFA Champions League group stage. In Tatarstan, Rubin carries cultural significance beyond sport, and the club's support is intertwined with regional identity. The south stand serves as the main active supporter section, generating the most consistent noise during matches.
Big matches
The 2018 FIFA World Cup gave the stadium global visibility. The Round of 16 match Spain 1-1 Russia (Russia advancing on penalties) was one of the tournament's defining shocks. The 2017 Confederations Cup brought reigning world champion Germany to Kazan, where they won their group opener. The stadium has also hosted Russian Cup finals, providing moments of domestic cup drama for Rubin Kazan's supporters in their own ground.
