Přehled
O stadionu
Accra Sports Stadium -- officially named Ohene Djan Sports Stadium -- is Ghana's national stadium, located in the heart of Accra, the country's capital. Opened in 1952, it has a capacity of approximately 40,000 seats and is the largest sports arena in Ghana. The ground is home to two of the country's most prominent football clubs: Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics. It bears the name of Ohene Djan, a pioneering Ghanaian sports administrator.
Location and surroundings
The stadium is situated in the Kanda neighbourhood in central Accra, close to Ring Road and the busy commercial districts of the capital. The city centre is only a short drive away, surrounded by markets, restaurants and the vibrant streets typical of a West African metropolis of over two million inhabitants. The ground is easily accessible from all major parts of Accra and sits near several landmarks of the Ghanaian capital.
Main uses
The stadium serves primarily as the home ground of Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League, the country's top-flight division. It also stages home matches of the Ghana national football team -- the Black Stars. In 2023 the venue hosted football and athletics competitions during the African Games 2023, which Ghana had the honour of organising. The arena is also used for non-sporting events including public ceremonies and national celebrations.
Historie
Cesta časem
Accra Sports Stadium was constructed under British colonial administration and opened in 1952, when Ghana was still called the Gold Coast. It was among the first modern sports arenas in sub-Saharan Africa, built as the territory prepared for the independence it would achieve in 1957 under Kwame Nkrumah -- making Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule.
Construction and opening
The stadium was built by British authorities to provide the colony with a modern sporting venue. After Ghanaian independence in 1957, the arena took on new national significance and was subsequently renamed in honour of Ohene Djan, a prominent Ghanaian sports administrator and athletics pioneer. It became the spiritual home of Ghanaian football and hosted the Black Stars' earliest international fixtures.
Major renovations
The stadium underwent significant upgrade works in preparation for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Ghana co-hosted. Accra Sports Stadium was one of four venues for the tournament, requiring substantial improvements to meet CAF and FIFA technical standards -- including upgraded stands, lighting, floodlights and player facilities. Further incremental improvements have followed in subsequent years.
Notable moments
The most painful chapter in the stadium's history is the Accra stadium disaster of 9 May 2001. During a Ghana Premier League match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, police fired tear gas inside the ground to quell fan violence, triggering a fatal stampede toward locked exit gates. 126 people died, making it the deadliest sporting disaster in Ghanaian history and one of the worst stadium tragedies in African football. The disaster prompted a fundamental review of safety standards across the continent. On a brighter note, the stadium has witnessed unforgettable triumphs -- Hearts of Oak's 2000 CAF Champions League title (the only one by a Ghanaian club) and the Black Stars' historic qualification runs ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Accra Sports Stadium is shaped by the fierce rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics -- two clubs rooted in the city's identity -- and the passionate supporters who back them. Hearts of Oak are Ghana's most decorated club, and their fans make every home match a loud and colourful occasion.
Fan culture
Hearts of Oak supporters are known as the Phobian Army and are among the most organised and vocal fans in Ghanaian football. The club's red and gold colours fill the stands, while drumming, chants and dance create a distinctly West African atmosphere full of energy and pride. Accra Great Olympics -- nicknamed the Wonder Club -- have their own loyal fanbase, and the Accra derby between the two sides ranks among the most intense fixtures in the Ghana Premier League. Football culture in Accra is woven into daily life: match results are debated in markets, restaurants and minibuses across the city.
Big matches
The stadium was the stage for pivotal Black Stars qualifying matches on the road to Ghana's historic debut at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The 2008 Africa Cup of Nations brought packed stands and electric tension when Ghana played on home soil. At club level, Hearts of Oak's celebrations following their 2000 CAF Champions League victory -- still the only continental club title for a Ghanaian side -- remain among the most vivid memories associated with the ground. The stadium has also hosted memorable Ghana Premier League finals and cup-tie showdowns that have defined careers and club histories.
