Přehled
O stadionu
Abanca Balaídos is a football stadium in Vigo, the largest city in the Spanish region of Galicia, and the home ground of RC Celta de Vigo in La Liga. With a capacity of approximately 29,000 seats, it ranks among the oldest continuously active stadiums in Spanish top-flight football, having first opened in 1928. The stadium was designed by Vigo-based architect Jenaro de la Fuente Álvarez. Its current commercial name has been in use since 2017, when Galician banking group Abanca acquired the naming rights.
Location and surroundings
The stadium is located in the Balaídos district in the south-eastern part of Vigo, roughly 3 km from the city centre. Vigo sits on the Atlantic coast of Galicia at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo estuary. The immediate neighbourhood is primarily residential, with good road access and car parking available nearby. Public transport connects the stadium to the city centre and the main railway stations.
Main uses
The stadium serves exclusively as the home venue for RC Celta de Vigo in La Liga and cup competitions. It is also the setting for the celebrated Galician derby against Deportivo La Coruña, one of the most intensely contested regional rivalries in Spanish football. The ground has hosted Spanish national team fixtures on selected occasions.
Historie
Cesta časem
Balaídos is one of the historic landmarks of Spanish football, its century-long existence mirroring the story of Galician football and the fortunes of the club that has called it home since the very beginning.
Construction and opening
The stadium was built and inaugurated in 1928, placing it among the oldest active football stadiums in Spain. The design was entrusted to Vigo architect Jenaro de la Fuente Álvarez, who created a compact and functional layout suited to the era. RC Celta de Vigo has played here continuously since opening day, and the historic name Estadio de Balaídos remained in use for nearly nine decades.
Major renovations
The stadium underwent significant development ahead of the 1982 FIFA World Cup, which Spain hosted, with Vigo assigned group-stage matches. Infrastructure and seating were upgraded to meet international standards. Further improvements to stands, facilities, and safety systems followed over subsequent decades in line with La Liga and UEFA requirements. The ground transitioned from its original open terracing to a fully seated configuration.
Notable moments
Balaídos hosted 1982 FIFA World Cup group-stage fixtures, including the match between Brazil and Scotland. In 2017 the stadium took its current commercial name, Abanca Balaídos, under a sponsorship agreement with Galician banking group Abanca. The Galician derby against Deportivo La Coruña has produced some of the most memorable atmospheres in the stadium's history across many decades of regional rivalry.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Abanca Balaídos is renowned for its intensity and loyalty — Celta's supporters are among the most vocal in La Liga and treat the stadium as a genuine fortress on matchday.
Fan culture
RC Celta de Vigo has a deeply rooted support base in Vigo and the wider Galicia region. The club's sky-blue and white colours fill the stands well before kick-off. The most active supporter section occupies the north end of the ground, where chanting and choreography reach their peak. Celtic symbols and Galician cultural identity are inseparable from the club's fan culture — Celta maintains a strong regional character that resists the homogenisation of the modern football market, and supporters take great pride in that distinctiveness.
Big matches
The Galician derby against Deportivo La Coruña is unquestionably the season's most charged fixture for supporters of both clubs. The rivalry stretches back decades and every edition at Balaídos carries an emotional weight that goes far beyond the scoreline. Celta's appearances in the UEFA Champions League in the 2002/03 season brought high-calibre European nights to the stadium that remain part of supporter mythology. Fixtures against Real Madrid and Barcelona regularly generate a packed and hostile atmosphere, where the home crowd plays a tangible role in driving results.
